Control Systems and Required Performance Levels
The EN ISO 13849-1 Standard estabilishes the criteria for designing and constructing control systems and their parts for machinery safety. Locks installed on Guards, a key element of control systems, are included in these requirements.
Identifying the safety functions carried out by control systems is a crucial step in mitigating risks. Each safety function correlates with a Required Performance Level (PLr), meaning the Performance Level required to attain the desired risk reduction for each safety function. Performance Levels are determined based on the severity of potential injury, the frequency and/or exposure to a hazard, and the likelihood of avoiding or lessening harm.
The higher the level of risk reduction needed, the greater the PLr must be. This is why different locks are designed to meet different safety requirements.
RISK ASSESSMENT IS CRITICAL IN DETERMINING THE PERFORMANCE LEVEL REQUIRED. Discover more
The responsibility for Risk Assessment as well as identifying safety functions and Performance Levels rests solely with the customer. Satech is limited to the sale of products and does not assume responsibility for whether the purchased locking system meets the appropriate Performance Level for the corresponding Control System.
Having skilled and qualified professionals conduct a thorough risk assessment provide you with the required information to select the appropriate locking system for your needs.
