Machine Guarding Systems: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

    satech-website-easyguard_faq-image

When should I choose EasyGuard as my machine guarding system?

EasyGuard is the right choice when your installation requires frequent access for maintenance or cleaning: the simplified Clamp assembly lets you remove a panel quickly, reducing machine downtime. It also suits fixed layouts in general applications where the priority is ease of installation and routine maintenance.

For environments with a high risk of impact or heavy industrial robots, the better fit is ImpactGuard, the most robust machine guard in the range.

What is the difference between EasyGuard and FastGuard?

EasyGuard and FastGuard are both machine safety fencing systems built on a 0.8 in (20 mm) frame, but they answer different needs.

EasyGuard uses posts (available in 1.6 in / 40 mm or 2.4 in / 60 mm sections) and a quick Clamp fastening system with a captive retained screw: it is the system for standard applications, installations with frequent maintenance and fixed layouts.

FastGuard has no posts at the panel (the structure is self-supporting), which cuts assembly time by up to 70% and makes it ideal for automated conveying systems and, more generally, for areas with limited impact risk.

Impact resistance differs as well: EasyGuard reaches 250 J (184 ft-lb) and FastGuard 390 - 500 J (288 - 369 ft-lb) depending on the version. The choice depends on your Risk Assessment and on the type of layout.

What is the impact resistance of EasyGuard, and when is it enough?

EasyGuard machine guards are tested up to 250 J (184 ft-lb) in accordance with EN ISO 14120, Annex C: a value that exceeds by 100% the 115 J reference minimum, which corresponds to the impact force of a person of roughly 200 lb (90 kg) falling accidentally against the guard. This is sufficient for the vast majority of standard manufacturing applications: machine tools, assembly lines, test cells, packaging lines. Impact forces vary with the type of machinery and process, however, so determining whether EasyGuard is right for your specific application requires a Risk Assessment.

If the results call for higher resistance, ImpactGuard (up to 2200 J / 1623 ft-lb) is the alternative to consider.

How does the EasyGuard quick Clamp system work?

The EasyGuard Clamp secures the panel to the post with a vertical movement. The system uses a captive retained screw (it cannot be lost during operations) and reduces installation time by up to 25% compared with traditional bolted systems, making removal and reassembly fast and repeatable.

The system qualifies as a fixed guard under EN ISO 14120, which defines a fixed guard as one whose removal requires the use of a tool, so it cannot happen accidentally. In the United States, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212(a)(2) separately requires that guards be affixed to the machine where possible, and secured elsewhere when attachment to the machine is not possible.

Which panel types are compatible with the EasyGuard machine guarding system?

EasyGuard, with its 0.8 in (20 mm) frame, is compatible with a range of modular panels: standard mesh, polycarbonate for visibility of the protected area, and composite panels in mesh+polycarbonate or mesh+sheet metal.

FullSteel panels, made of folded sheet metal without a frame, are not compatible with the Clamp connection: for a solid enclosure, Universal posts and captive fastening hardware are used instead.

Which machine guard is best for frequent maintenance access?

For installations with frequent maintenance, EasyGuard is the most suitable system: panels are removed and refitted quickly with the simplified Clamp assembly, reducing unplanned downtime. Where the protected area requires very frequent access, the correct solution is to add a door with an interlocking system to the EasyGuard perimeter: this allows quick opening while keeping the machine locked out.

Note that servicing machinery behind the guard is subject to the Lockout/Tagout requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147. Our Technical Department is available to advise on the most suitable configuration.

How do I mount door hinges if EasyGuard posts have no holes?

Doors on all Satech systems are assembled using Universal posts, drilled on three sides and prepared for mounting hinges and accessories.

In an EasyGuard perimeter the posts intended for doors are easy to identify: they are the only ones with holes, while standard EasyGuard posts have none, preventing the build-up of dust and debris. See our Doors page for the full range of available accessories.

Do EasyGuard 40 mm posts provide enough stability for large layouts?

Yes. The 1.6 in (40 mm) posts of the EasyGuard system provide stability and strength even in large layouts under standard operating conditions, with no additional reinforcement required.

For more demanding applications — continuous vibration, high dynamic loads, or frequent heavy vehicle traffic — you can add post braces or move up to the 2.4 in (60 mm) posts available in the EasyGuard 60 system.

Our Technical Department offers a free evaluation of your specific layout.

Is an EasyGuard mesh panel weaker than an ImpactGuard panel?

No. The framed mesh panels of the EasyGuard and ImpactGuard systems are identical, available in 0.8 in (20 mm) and 1.2 in (30 mm) frame sections.

The difference in impact resistance under EN ISO 14120, Annex C comes from the assembly method, not the panel: EasyGuard uses a quick Clamp rated for impacts up to 250 J (184 ft-lb), while ImpactGuard connects to the posts with captive BHC screws, raising resistance to 2200 J (1623 ft-lb) — and 2600 J (1917 ft-lb) in the version with 2.4 in (60 mm) posts and a 1.2 in (30 mm) frame.

Can EasyGuard machine safety fencing be installed outdoors?

No. EasyGuard machine safety fencing, like all Satech perimeter guarding systems, is designed specifically for indoor industrial environments.

The standard powder coating is intended for enclosed spaces such as production plants and warehouses, where posts without holes offer the added benefit of not trapping dust or moisture inside. For specific finish or corrosion-protection requirements, contact our team to discuss the available options.
